He suggested if she was in my class, I take a completely different approach. An approach that screamed confidence, cool and calm. One that said everything our first encounter didn't.
He suggested I interact with her outside the classroom every day. Slowly strengthening our interactions every time we crossed paths. And with that he patted me on the shoulder, wished me luck and left.
As luck would have it, the next day I discovered Jasmine and I were indeed in the same class. And I sprang into action.
As we neared the classroom door to our first class our eyes met and we exchanged smiles. The second class we made eye contact again and I said "Hi." The third class I suspiciously said, "Have I seen you before?" earning a snicker, as I stepped though the door after of her.
The fourth class I stopped beside the doorway and said "Are you stalking me? Every time I go to this class there you are." She laughed, stopped to re-introduce herself and asked if she could borrow a pen off me.
After class she caught up to me in the hallway to return my pen, but I told her she could keep it... as long as she admitted she was stalking me. She laughed again, refusing to admit she was a stalker. I said then the least she could do is buy me a coffee for the pen and stalking me.
She looked at me, seemingly stunned at the request, and my heart started to race thinking I'd overdone it. My stomach sank. My mind ran through all the worst possible scenarios, and I readied myself for her to either smash me in the head with her textbook or knee me in the groin, for making such a bold request. But instead, she gave me a flirtatious smile and agreed.
I found a table and tried to contain my excitement. I closed my eyes and focused on being confident, cool and calm. And to take it slow. To do everything my unexpected senior advisor had said.
She returned minutes later with the coffees. She told me guys were constantly hitting on her since school began. I told her the same thing was happening to me, but I stopped wearing my mini skirt and they had started to back off. She laughed again, brushing her hand against mine as she did.
My heart started to beat in my ears. I couldn't believe things were going so well. I was teasing her, accusing her of stalking me and she couldn't get enough of it. Suddenly, I realized everything I been taught about women was wrong. That I had been led astray. That I should be treating them like friends, not worshiping them like idols.
So I pushed my luck even further. I followed the joke up by telling her that all the attention was harmless, except... I let my voice trail off. "Except what?" she asked. My face suddenly went serious. I leaned in and whispered, "I think I might have a stalker." She laughed even harder this time, startling the couple at the table beside us.
We chatted for another couple minutes before she just blurted out, "You're not like the rest of the guys I meet. You're very unique." To which I replied, "Unique enough to continue stalking I suppose." She agreed... and invited me to a house party on the weekend. I said I'd think about it and we exchanged numbers, but only after I made her promise not to call me more than ten times a day.
With that, we headed off to different classes. I walked the halls with renewed confidence. I had taken my first step towards understanding what attracts women. And just as importantly, I had a party to start getting ready for.
