Singles should realize they don't have to win people over on the first call. If you had a great conversation in-person and they gave you their number - you've already proven yourself. So don't be nervous. Just be the same awesome person you were when you met them.
Ladies first
Don't be afraid to make the first call. Aggressive women date more men because they strike while their competitors are waiting for him to call. An attractive man will always have options, so grab a spot on his social calendar first and ensure you'll see him again. It's the 21st Century ladies. Calling him first doesn't look desperate, it looks confident.
First call
If you know what you're doing, the first call is easy. You can use it to separate yourself from the rest of the pack. Successful first calls can be broken down into four parts: storied start, transition, offer and challenge. Once you master each, you'll start looking forward to making that once-dreaded first call.
Start the first call off with a story. Tell them something amazing that's happen to you between the time the two of you last talked. The story should immediately capture their attention and let you lead the conversation. While you should never lie, it's okay to fudge the story time-frame a little. If it happened within the last month - that's fine.
The storied start makes your life look interesting, something they want to be a part of. Most people's lives are boring. Offer a chance at excitement. When you start the conversation off with, "The most fascinating thing happened to me the other day..." they can't help but get excited.
Transition
Transition from story to how life is treating them. If life is good, celebrate it with them by asking for more details. If they tell you it's going poorly and the energy level starts to plummet, ask them what's one of the craziest things that ever have happened to them. If they say they haven't done anything notable, ask them what they would like to have done.
Always find something positive to talk about. You've shown how interesting you are - now give them a chance to do the same. Find a topic that makes them feel good about themselves. Something that fills them with positive energy. End your story and immediately ask, "So what was the most fascinating thing that's happened to you since we met?" Play it by ear from there.
Offer
Once again, the key is to strike while the conversation is hot. Say, "You know what, that's enough information right now. You and I need to do this in person. Let's get together tomorrow night." If they're enjoying the conversation, they'll most likely jump at the chance to see you.
Then, offer a specific time and place, with an added fallback time. Be flexible, but not a pushover. If they can't make the times you suggest, but offer another time or date, pause, and then tell them the time works for you. If you have something else scheduled, move it to another time. Nothing sucks the fun out of a phone conversation quicker than date time duels.
Challenge
Now that you have got the date all lined up, all you need to do is ensure they show up. One thing you can do to increase those chances by issuing a challenge. If your conversation went well, feel free to skip it and end on a "See you soon" or "Until then." But if you want to improve your odds - offer a challenge.
Ask them if they're the type of person who doesn't show up. When they answer no, they'll want to show up because they don't want to look like a liar. Another way of challenging them is by competing against them to find the best cup of coffee, to take the best photo on your walk. Find something that captures their competitive spirit.
Time frame
Try not to be on the phone for more than ten minutes. Save all that conversation for when you meet in person. By not telling them everything about you, you'll create more intrigue, more mystery, and have more to talk about. Staying on the phone too long only increases the chance you'll bore them or say something that will wreck your chance of landing that first date.
