Understanding Women

Language of woman
Women are masters at hidden meaning, subtle hints, and subliminal suggestions, while men are more simplistic. More direct. Women prefer to take a more diplomatic route during conversations with both men and women. They leave hints at what they really think of your ideas and stories. They don't come out and tell you exactly what they're thinking, instead, they insinuate. Smart men look for hidden meanings in the words of women.

Avoid communication mishaps
Knowing how women communicate, knowing they are more emotional, talk more, and prefer to talk face-to-face, can avoid misunderstandings. Misinterpreted, men may see these three actions as troubling or acts of disinterest. It could lead to anger, resentment or self-doubt. Knowing how women communicate can allow men to avoid all these potential pitfalls.

Emotional styles
Women are taught to embrace their emotions. Men have traditionally been emotionally repressed. This emotional divide is a constant cause of friction between men and women. Men don't understand why women are so much more emotional than themselves. Women don't understand why men are so afraid to express the way they feel. Answers to both questions are easy to find and understand.

For more than a century women have been encouraged to cry, show their feelings and express how they really felt for a man. Since childhood women were taught it was okay to express how they felt. Emotions were something to be encouraged, explored, and exploited. Their mothers, community leaders and Hollywood's leading ladies only reinforced this opinion. It's no surprise women are more emotional than men.

Getting a woman to open up, to pour out her heart and soul, to share her dreams and aspirations, how she's feelings, what she's thinking, is far easier than a man. A woman doesn't have decades of emotional repression training to overcome. So don't be surprised when she asks you the questions above. She asks them because she cares, not because she's judgemental, so don't freak out when you hear them asked. And they will be asked.

If you're not ready to honestly answer her, explain to her, for men showing emotions is dangerous. It can lead to a loss of respect from your male friends. Explain there has to be a deep level of trust and comfort between the two of you before you can begin to get in touch with your emotional side. And that takes time to build.

Biological Influence
Men and women have very different biological agendas. A man is biologically driven to ensure the existence of future generations by impregnating as many women as possible. A woman is biologically driven to ensure the safety of her children and herself. This can lead to a biological divide.

Commitment
Women are naturally inclined to expect a man commit to help her during pregnancy and help raise the child. Men are naturally inclined to avoid commitment. While society's views on relationships may have changed somewhat, our biological impulses have not. Evolution happens slowly, not overnight. Think of the body as an outdated machine that hasn't had its program updated to today's values and expectations.

Testosterone
As long as men have testosterone pumping through their veins, the biological divide will cause relationship friction. An elevated level of this hormone causes men to be more aggressive and sexually driven. But that doesn't mean these urges can't be controlled.

For men it's important you keep your aggression and sex drive to reasonable levels. Women don't understand the male need to compete, the need to test themselves against others, the need to prove their skills or superiority. Men must balance those needs with her needs.

Biological purpose
Men have to understand that man's enhanced sex drive was key in keeping the species from going extinct. There is no shame in that. The only shame is if you use your sex drive as an excuse. Women know millions of men have controlled their sex drives, so don't feel it's an adequate excuse for cheating.

UNDERSTANDING TIPS
Don't expect a woman to change

One of the most common mistakes men make is thinking they're going to change a woman. To make them more like themselves. Women can't become more like men. Their biology and socialization won't allow it. Women can change if they want to, but only in small ways - being more appreciative, better dressers, more relaxed. And even then it's not going to happen overnight.
